Utah first responders receive sensory bags to better support autistic individuals—advancing safety, understanding, and inclusion across Weber and Davis counties.
First responders in Weber and Davis counties are now better equipped to handle emergency situations involving individuals with autism—thanks to a thoughtful initiative from the Autism Council of Utah. The organization recently began distributing sensory bags to police, EMTs, and firefighters across the region, helping bridge the communication and sensory gap that can escalate otherwise manageable encounters.
Each sensory bag includes items specifically selected to help calm and communicate with individuals on the autism spectrum: noise-canceling headphones, fidget tools, picture exchange communication boards, and information cards linked to local autism resources. These tools provide immediate support in high-stress situations where traditional communication methods may fall short.
The sensory bag project isn't just about equipment—it’s about education and empathy. For individuals with autism, especially in moments of distress, loud noises, bright lights, or unclear commands can be overwhelming. Often, behaviors such as covering ears or avoiding eye contact are misinterpreted as defiance or noncompliance.
By giving first responders access to simple but powerful tools, the Autism Council of Utah is helping ensure that these interactions are safer, calmer, and more respectful for everyone involved. Michelle Hiles, one of the council's volunteers and a caseworker with the Utah Division of Services for People with Disabilities, emphasized the importance of building rapport through sensory supports—and the positive difference it's already making in the field.
Efforts like this highlight the growing need for awareness and accessibility across all levels of public life. But true support for the autism community doesn’t stop at first response—it continues in the home, in schools, and through personalized therapeutic services.
