Sensory Path Brings Color & Calm to Local Arts Park

New sensory path at Lexington Manor Park promotes inclusion, motor skills, and calm, while supporting community wellness and autism awareness in Maryland.

A vibrant new sensory path has just opened at Lexington Manor Passive Park, transforming a simple walking trail into an engaging, multi-sensory experience for visitors of all ages. Designed and crafted by talented students from Chopticon High School, this nature-themed path is more than just beautiful art—it’s a tool that supports motor skills, self-regulation, and focused attention through playful physical activities paired with sensory stimulation.

Sensory paths like this are specially designed interactive trails that encourage whole-body movement alongside sensory engagement. Whether it’s hopping, balancing, or stepping through colorful patterns, participants are invited to activate both mind and body in a way that’s fun and purposeful. The project exemplifies the perfect blend of creativity, community, and inclusivity.

Lexington Manor Passive Park: A Hub for Community & Wellness

Known as an official “Arts Park,” Lexington Manor Passive Park offers much more than walking paths. Visitors enjoy fitness stations, a disc golf course, a community garden, and a vibrant calendar full of local festivals and events. The addition of the sensory path enhances the park’s mission to be welcoming and accessible to everyone, including individuals with sensory processing needs or developmental differences.

This inspiring project was brought to life through a strong partnership between St. Mary’s County Arts Council, St. Mary’s County Recreation & Parks, and the creative minds at Chopticon High School. Christina Bishop, Project Manager for Recreation & Parks, shared her enthusiasm for the path’s future impact:

“I am extremely pleased that the path has come to life. It is a goal I have had for many years to enhance the inclusiveness of our parks. I hope that the path at LMPP continues to grow and touch more senses and it will act as a model for paths in other parks.”

Why Sensory Paths Matter for Development and Wellbeing

Sensory paths are valuable tools for children and adults alike, especially those with sensory processing differences or autism. These paths promote essential skills including balance, coordination, motor planning, and emotional regulation in a natural, engaging environment. Incorporating sensory-friendly spaces in community parks helps foster inclusion and awareness for people of all abilities.
