NBA Coaches Unite for Autism With Custom Sneaker Auction

NBA coaches unite for autism with custom sneakers, raising awareness and funds through Sotheby’s auction to support families and ABA care across Utah.

Autism acceptance is taking center court again this season—literally. For the second year in a row, Utah Jazz Assistant Coach Scott Morrison is leading a heartfelt initiative that’s uniting the entire NBA around a cause close to his heart: autism acceptance.

Inspired by his son Max’s autism diagnosis in 2022, Morrison and his wife Susanne launched the custom sneaker campaign to raise awareness and support for autism advocacy through their nonprofit, To The Max Foundation. Now, with participation from all 30 NBA head coaches, plus league officials, former players, and broadcasters, the campaign has gained major momentum in its second season.

Custom Sneakers Turn Courtside into a Platform for Inclusion

From April 2–9, fans watching NBA games saw something unique: every head coach wearing one-of-a-kind sneakers designed to celebrate and support the autism community. Featuring each team’s colors and powerful symbols of neurodiversity, the sneakers are more than just fashion—they’re statements of unity.

After being showcased on the court, the sneakers are now part of an exclusive auction hosted by Sotheby’s (May 13–20), with proceeds going directly to support families and organizations through the To The Max Foundation. Players like James Harden and Jayson Tatum donated autographed memorabilia and game-worn shoes, amplifying the reach of the campaign even further.

A League-Wide Commitment to Autism Acceptance

What started as a personal project has evolved into a league-wide show of solidarity. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, former Jazz players like Joe Ingles and Deron Williams, and popular autism advocates are helping bring visibility to the movement. Local organizations like the Autism Council of Utah are also participating, sharing resources with fans and families during home games at the Delta Center—a venue certified as sensory-inclusive.

More than just a fundraiser, this campaign is creating cultural change around how autism is understood and embraced—not just in basketball, but in everyday life.
